As one of our main aims was to raise awareness about this issue in our school campus and community, we decided to organize a poster campaign.
Poster Campaign
In-School Poster Campaign
Through a pre-survey testing the knowledge of our school students on smoking, we found out that a great majority of them guessed less than 40% correctly. The point we are trying to convey through carrying out this survey is to show the contrast before and after our posters are displayed around the school campus. There are two types of bilingual posters that we have put up around the school with one that is in English and Korean along with another which is in English and Chinese to suit our international school environment.
These multi-linguistic posters are made so that everyone can understand the facts easily in their preferred language. The outcome of this campaign is that majority of the respondents surveyed were able to distinguish the facts and had a higher score than when they were previously surveyed.
We've created 10 different designs with one fact on each; below are some samples of our posters.

Cross-Culture Poster Campaign
Moreover, we worked with schools internationally to enlarge our influence in obviating smoking into the minds of the younger generation. This was also a way of spreading the impact of our campaign internationally as we've contacted several school in other continents (Such as international schools in Australia, Indonesia... etc.) around the world who've also put up our Posters to raise awareness amongst this topic.
If you are interested in spreading our posters (as seen above), please feel free to contact us at [email protected] (Nancy Yang) :)

Local Community Poster Campaign
Community Poster: Chinese Version
To raise awareness in our local community, we came up with an idea where people have the opportunity to show their support for our endeavour by ripping of a tag at the bottom of the posters.
We decided to compile all 10 facts about smoking on one single poster and spread it around our local communities. This covered a major area of our target audience group in Beijing as our group members live across areas such as near Village (one of the most internationally influenced areas in Beijing), JoyCity (A huge mall), WangJing (an area densely populated with international residents) and other areas.
The result was that there was a considerably reasonable amount of people who supported us and demonstrated some success in our poster campaign in the community.

Video + Experiment
To demonstrate the dangers of smoking, we conducted an experiment on smoking.
Experiment: Before a cigarette was lit, the temperature was 24°C in room temperature, cotton wools were pure white and an indicator was blue in colour. After we lighted a cigarette, the reading of the thermometer rose promptly to 30°C and the cotton wools turned to a nasty hue of brown. The indicator converted to green, showing the acidity nature of cigarettes. The highly successful experiment unveiled that cigarettes are bad for our health where if smoked excessively will blacken and dry up our lungs as it contains tar and heat. Moreover, the cigarette is acidic because it contains chemicals such as carbon monoxide which can decrease the amount of oxygen sent to our cells.
We then made a short awareness raising video based on this experiment which was shown during our School's Christmas Fair to raise awareness.

School Christmas Fair Booth + Finger Printing CampaignDuring our school's Christmas Booth, we bought a stall and succeeded in achieving our aim to barricade the younger minds from smoking through a Finger Printing Campaign.
Those who correspond with us printed their thumbs in an A2 Poster designed by our group member to show their support fighting against smoking. Additionally, the footage of our experiment was played and shown to those who visited our booth to further raise awareness. |
Unit-E Article
To further raise awareness on a local level, our group wrote an article to raise awareness on the topic of smoking by posting in on the student-run “Unit-E” magazine which would be spread amongst all Beijing’s main International schools.
